How-to grow carrots

There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing that the carrots you’re eating are ones you’ve grown yourself. Not only is it fun, but it’s quick, easy and cheap too.

When to plant?

March – July

When to harvest?

June – October

Where to plant?

Soil bed or large containers

What to do: Firstly, you’ll need to plant the seeds in lines about 1cm deep. The rows need to be roughly 20cm apart, push the seeds directly into the soil and then give them a good drink of water.

Carrots need room to grow. Once the seedlings have grown to about 4cm high, they need to be roughly 7cm apart. Pull out any that are too close together by hand. Don’t forget to throw away the ones you’ve pulled out.

Keep on top of weeds by pulling them out, using a trowel to loosen up any large weeds. Water your carrots enough to keep the ground damp, and around once a week add some liquid feed to the water.

From June onwards, your carrots are ready to be enjoyed. If the soil is quite tight when pulling your carrots, loosen it gently with a garden fork.

When raking up leaves put a large bag (the type used by builders with handles) in the wheelbarrow, you can collect more that way and they don't fall out all the time when wheeling them to the pile.
