How-to grow fruit trees

Eating healthily feels even more rewarding when it's been picked from your very own fruit tree. Not only is it fun, but it's quick, easy and cheap too.

When to plant?

Autumn or early Spring

When to harvest?

As each tree is different, you'll have to check individual packaging details to see when your fruit can be enjoyed.

Where to plant?

Soil beds or large pots, in sunny and sheltered surroundings.

What to do:

The night before you plant your tree, soak the roots in a bucket of water.

Trees like the sun, so select a spot in a bright and sheltered position. Dig a hole that's about a third wider than the roots and as deep as the roots are long.

Insert a long stake into the hole and then place your tree at the bottom. Tie to the stake loosely with twine. Fill in with soil, leaving plenty around the base of the tree.

Ensure that you keep your fruit tree well watered, paying attention to the soil around it. Make sure that your tree doesn’t go hungry by giving it liquid feed once a week.

Once the tree starts to fruit, simply pick by hand as it ripens.

When raking up leaves put a large bag (the type used by builders with handles) in the wheelbarrow, you can collect more that way and they don't fall out all the time when wheeling them to the pile.
