Can you help me.....???? I am developing a 'school' allotment on a very generous plot of land, however I have set myself a HUGE task of not paying for ANYTHING that comes into the allotment. Already i have had 2 tonnes of soil off the council, a free greenhouse, which we are using plastic bottles donated by the children and parents to build the walls back up (obviously dont want glass). What I would like your help with, is where can I get tools and wood to build planters from for free?? Any ideas would be greatfully received. Thank You in advance Kelsy217

i'm a great one for nosing around in skips - it's amazing what gets chucked out especially in wealthier areas. I always, always ask first though as the contents of the skip still legally belong to the residents (and there is nothing more annoying than people rummaging around and making a mess of a well-loaded skip).
I've got old flooring and palettes, and old water tanks (great for growing deep-rooted veg in) before for projects I've been doing for friends straight from the builders before it's gone into a skip - which makes the builders happy too because they don't have move it or use up space in their skip.
And when I've been building gardens myself, it's really pained me to have to put perfectly good paving, rope-top-edging and gravel in to the skip. I'd love it if someone could reuse it, so I'd keep a look out for anyone who looks like they're about to start a project and get in there quickly :o)

How about the local tip? I'm sure if you contacted them or your local Council they would consider saving tools, wood, etc for you? Also try your local Homebase store, ours often has a bin of unwanted pots, scrap wood, plant trays etc, you just help yourself to what you need. I'm sure if you phoned them they would be able to help you. Try thinking laterally too, ask your parents for old bins, washing up bowls, tin cans, toilet/kitchen roll inners (ideal as seed starting trays!), sinks, baths, you can plant into almost anything of any size. Good luck.
