Just received some chilli seeds and am wondering if anyone has any advice as to the best way to get them germinating as they seem to need a very high heat to get them going. Anyone had any success growing them from seed, or should I just get some plants ;)
I have also been quite successful in growing these from seed. I just place them in a shallow tray of moist compost and cover with a polythene bag. Place on a sunny windowsill and be patient. They do take a while to 'sprout', but the wait is worth it.Then just transplant into small pots. keep warm until the sun is warm enough for them to go in the greenhouse, or outside in a sheltered sunny spot. They do not like to be too damp at any stage of the growing process.
I have grown chillies from seeds quite sucessfully I start mine in a covered propagator tray on a windowsill they do like to be kept warm and take a long time to germinate compared to other seeds
I agree with the window sill bit also the boiler is good so long as it does not get too warm. clingfilm over a pot keeps the moisture in as they like it warm and damp. I have always grown mine from seed. Enjoy
I put mine in the airing cupboard to germinate, you do need to check them regularly, when they begin to show I move them to a sunny windowsill and eventually to the greenhouse when it is warm enough.

i grew chillies from seed last year and it was so easy. I put the seeds into a seed tray and once they started to grow I then put them into individual pots and kept them in the greenhouse. I initially started them off in the house for the heat. The results were good as well.
I'm growing a Dorset Naga on my windowsill very happily at the moment, no special treatment, I actually ran out of pots so sowed the seed in an un-used mug! I know they are supposed to need quite a stable temperature so I waited until the weather steadied last year, then just dropped him in and waited, Within 2 weeks there was germination and he's now about 3 inches tall with lovely big leaves.

That's exactly what I do for things like courgettes and squashes that won't fit in my little propagator.
Otherwise I have a heated window sill propagator called something like Super 7 that has quarter-size trays and with lids that are perefct for sowing a few tomato and chilli seeds.
My boyfriend always groans when it comes out at this time of year and I start to take over every spot near a window wioth pots and trays... :o)
Thanks for everybodys answers - am now going to attempt sowing ours as looks a lot more positive than I'd read elsewhere
