I've never grown my own veg before but would love to start.
Any tips on what are the easiest things to grow for a complete beginner?
I've cleared away a spot at the end of the garden which is quite sunny, but the ground is stony. I've been picking out stones and adding compost, but that's about it. There seems to be so many things to choose from when it comes to seeds I'm not sure where to start....
It does depend a lot on what you like to eat. A good starting point would be runner beans and peas, both are easy, give good crops and taste great. Giving them plenty of water is the key to success.
I see runner bean plants in my local nursery but, surely, it's too soon to plant them out. I am planning to pot my bean seeds under glass over Easter. Will the plants be ready to plant out for the growing season?
Hi Chascona - Easy to grow veggies that can go into the ground this spring are swiss chard, garlic, potatoes, radishes, lettuce and spinach. Later in the early summer you can plant courgettes, tomatoes and chilis.
So glad you decided to start a veg patch! It will be highly rewarding!
