Good question. I actually like being contsrained by a brief, in fact often there aren't many constrints other than the budget, because most people who get me in don't have a clue what to do with their gardens so it's kind of carte blanche. The biggest compliment I can be paid is when clients say: "Gosh, I would never have thought of that".

I find my own garden more difficult because I guess I'm too aware of all the options - I could go tropical, mediterranean, arty, contemporary, have a 'hot' scheme, a cool one... I find it hard to settle on just one. And of course I'm influenced by the designs I come up with for other people's gardens, and the planst and products I use. I get dizzy when I think about it.

I'm getting better though and have started to get down to what it is I really want. I love the juxtaposition of formal and 'messy' so I'm planting up low box hedging in assymetric patterns and adding square box topiary in different sizes, and then letting grasses and flowers run riot around them... well that's the plan. Below is how it looked last year...
