You plant spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils and tulips, in autumn (October-November) and they pop up a few months later. See http://www.getintogardening.co.uk/getadvice/howtoarticle/19. However, you could try buying some pots of daffodils from places like Homebase now and 'cheat' by diiging holes, putting the pots in and covering with soil (keep clear of the stems though). Then when the daffs have died down, simply lift the pots and keep them until autumn when you can turn out the bulbs and plant them properly.

That's a good trick!

When your daffodils have finished flowering (in pots or as bulbs in the ground next year) pick off the flowers. However do not cut back the yellowing leaves. These can end up looking pretty manky, unfortunately, but the daffodil bulbs re-absorb the nutrients from them giving you better blooms next year, so its essential you leave them in place for a while.
