Was jjust going to ask about snails! This answers my question!
They seem to be everywhere in my garden. Luckily there have been more snails than slugs - don't know why but I don't mind snails, I loathe s;lugs!

I was having a good sort out in my garden this weekend and it's a great time to remove snails because they are still hiding away from the cold weather. They were inside my compost bins, under the rims of spare pots, tucked under the folds of bags of compost and inside my storage boxes too. I gathered quite a catch! So if you get the chance this weekend, go on the hunt - it's worth it.

Eurgh - what's the best thing to do with them once you find them?
Agree with Chascona, I can handle a snail (just pick them up by the shell) but am a bit squeamish about slugs!

i collect them up in a carrier bag and put them in the bin. Or they go in the trug with weeds etc and get put into the big compost bin that council come and empty every week - as all our food waste goes in there too, I like think that I gave them a final supper before they're mulched!

Copper bands DO work but the plant pot must be away from a wallI so that the leaves or any other part aren't touching a surface that the snail or slug can climb up and bypass the copper. I have hostas in pots which are slug free since I put copper bands on.
In Response to KEEPING ON TOP OF SLUGS & SNAILS:
These slimey pests are always unwelcome so here are my tips...They’ve been a big problem this year because, in London at least, it’s been so wet, so a good time to go snail hunting is just after a down pour, or in the evening when the sun is in.
Don't give them any shelter – check under (and in) bags of compost, pots, bricks and large stones – basically anywhere damp and shady where they can hide – then gather them up and dispose of them.Pellets will help break the cycle but can be nasty things - only use ones that are wildlife, pet and child friendly. Try Growing Success Advanced Slug Killer as these are also approved for organic use if applied as directed.Copper bands around pots don’t seem to work.I’ve sprinkled oatmeal in a ring around young plants before and in the veg patch have put comfrey leaves right round my new cabbages so they chomp them and not my plants. Both seemed to help.Of course some swear by beer traps.A combination of methods is called for I think. It’s a war and the only way to win is by being persistent and ruthless!

I collect my slugs and snails and transfer them to the local park.It seems cruel to kill them just because they munch a few of our plants.Every creature has a right to life.By transfering them to your local park area they have a chance to live their lives.
Thrushes and Blackbirds love snails and slugs, as do many other birds. The reason why many birds are in decline is because people use chemicals to kill these slimey creatures, birds digest chemically killed slugs and snails then die themselves from ingesting the chemicals .. think about it!
