Re: Tidy up – How are you going to start the tidy up and where are you going to start? min 50 words
First thing I tend to do is let my 12 pet chickens out to roam free (I will explain why later)
I then systematically start at the edges and work my way in back toward the back door. I check fences first & repair, repaint to make them look tidy and then move on to the easy stuff like clearing old leaves, composting various debris from the storms we had recently.
Next, I have loads of shrubs/bushes/lavender that need the dead wood cut away and pruning. Then the lawn gets a quick haircut and re-seed where needed. Everything organic gets chopped up and put in the bottom of my currently empty raised beds (I have found a bit of on site composting works very well)
Once all the mucky organic stuff is done I borrow a pressure washer from my neighbor and blast the greenhouse (inside and out), weed, clear and wash paths, patio set, chicken coop and run. (so glad I have a DIY plastic chicken coop!)
At this stage the raised beds look very untidy so I pop out and grab all my bags of compost to cover the organic stuff filling my raised beds with soil. They look neat (composting goes on beneath and they are then ready and waiting for veg plants to be sown.
I let the chickens out to free-range first as (for a start, their antics are great fun to watch) they eat all the slugs, snails and bugs (before my baby veg plants go in! Can't beat a bit of natural pest control. They scratch and dig any patches of bare soil, eat a few weeds (which saves me a job - and luckily they adore Dandelions) and they fertilise for me as they go! The ladies can be very helpful in the garden :) (just got to watch they don't eat the 'whole lawn' and keeping them away from any baby veg plants is also a must)
